Reading to the Shalom Geniuses - Eton Williams

Back

Reading to the Shalom Geniuses - Eton WilliamsDuring a visit to Jamaica during the Christmas holidays last year, I got a chance to join Rondeen and read to students at the Shalom Basic School in August Town.

I had a small group of half a dozen 4 and 5 year old. Together we chose which of three books we would read first.

I haven't read that much to children of this age-you have to maintain some sense of order so that everybody can participate in the story while keeping it fun at the same time.

It was touching to be so well received by both the students and their teacher at the school. I felt like my time there was appreciated and I got a lot of love from the students. Of course, they were very bright and enthusiastic and had some interesting things to say about the story and its characters.  I felt I got more than I gave.

It was a good experience for me and I would recommend it to anyone who would enjoy revisiting that time in their childhood. My only regret is that I could not be there on a regular basis, I can see it would be wonderful and have a more lasting benefit for both the students and I.
