Early Childhood Education Needs More Funds

Professor Mareen Samms-VaughanA Letter to the Editor printed in The Jamaica Observer argues that current programs to assess the academic needs of pre-kindergarten students in Jamaica are misuses of funds that could be invested in teacher training and classroom equipment. Key statistics include the shockingly low percentage of Jamaica’s education budget allotted to early childhood education (2.2%).

As Professor Samms-Vaughan, chair of the Early Childhood Commission, has said: "Early childhood development is important to Jamaica because this is the time that children's brains are developing maximally and it is also the time when we get the greatest investment on education."
